Anaphylaxis Policies and Regulations
Each province and territory in Canada has its own Ministry or Department of Education which governs schools. In 2005, the Government of Ontario passed Sabrina's Law, requiring all publicly-funded schools in the province to have an anaphylaxis policy and individual plans for students at risk. As the first law of its kind, it has influenced school policies in other provinces and territories.

It is recommended that all school board policies include the following:
  • An overview of anaphylaxis
  • General guidelines for responding in an emergency and reducing the risk of exposure to allergens in classrooms and common school areas
  • Defined responsibilities for school boards, principals, nurses, parents, pupils at risk
  • A requirement that every school principal
    • obtain information about pupil's life-threatening allergies upon registration
    • develop an emergency anaphylaxis plan for each pupil at risk
    • maintain a file for each pupil at risk which includes proof of diagnosis, current treatment, an emergency procedure for the pupil, and current contact information
    • arrange for regular training (annually at a minimum) for all employees and others who are in contact with pupils at risk.
  • Requirements regarding the location of epinephrine auto-injectors
  • A communication plan for the dissemination of information on life-threatening allergies to the school community

You can compare your area's policies with those of other provinces, territories or school boards for ideas and best practices. The following links provide information about anaphylaxis policies in Canada:
