Advocate
Living with severe allergies can be difficult but when you have the support and understanding of others, life can be much easier. Anaphylaxis Canada has played an important role in improving:
  • Public awareness about food allergy and anaphylaxis
  • Policies to keep children safe in daycares and schools
  • Food ingredient labels
  • Travel policies

We do this through:
  • Media interviews
  • Writing campaigns
  • Meeting with government and company representatives
  • Participating in government roundtable discussions, consumer surveys, and conferences

We continue to work with many other like-minded groups and individuals who are affected by severe allergies. Together, we have created a stronger voice making Canada a safer place for people at risk of anaphylaxis.

We hope that you, too, will participate in our advocacy efforts and will make your views known when there are important issues. Here are some things that have helped us in our advocacy efforts - good tips to follow when you are advocating:
  • Be polite
  • Keep your message short
  • Speak from the heart
  • Thank others for taking positive steps

Food Labelling

We have been working for more than a decade to get the government to regulate food labelling. Consumers rely on clear, accurate and easy to understand labels to help them make informed choices.

In 2008 Health Canada proposed changes to improve labelling but they had not been passed as planned by the end of 2010. Anaphylaxis Canada worked with other groups in a letter writing campaign to get these changes regulated.

We are pleased that the new rules are expected to be in place by August 2012! They will make it easier to read food labels. http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/label-etiquet/allergen/index-eng.php.

Sabrina's Law

Anaphylaxis Canada played an important role in getting Sabrina's Law passed by the Ontario government in 2005. By 2006 all Ontario school boards had to establish policies to protect children at risk. We continue to work with ministries of education across the country to create safer school communities.

Airline Policies

Anaphylaxis Canada has worked hard to inform the airline industry about the issues concerning allergic travellers. Some airlines have implemented policies to improve the safety and comfort of passengers with severe allergies but more improvements still need to be made.
